The foremost duty of a breeder is to consult you on the screenings done to his Bull Terriers. He should be aware of congenital diseases the Bull Terrier is prone to. A responsible breeder will not conceal that individual dogs in the breeding line suffered from this or that ailment. The question is whether he took care to lessen the possibility of inherited defects in his new litter.
Bull Terriers are prone to locating patellas, hearth and kidney problems, and other disorders. Deafness is often associated with white Bull Terriers. This disease is linked to the coat color and occurs in Dalmatians and other dogs with a predominantly white coat. Puppies usually take the BAER test.
Puppies that turn out to be unilaterally deaf make good pets. They experience some difficulties with directions, yet can live happy lives and brighten up the lives of their owners. Evidently, such dogs should not be used in breeding to avoid litters with similar problems. Bilateral Bull Terrier puppies are usually euthanized.
Look through official papers and written references. Also, ask the breeder to show you the Bull Terrier's parents. Pay attention to their behavior. Though there is no reason to be alarmed if the mother is a little nervous when a stranger takes a look at her puppies, she should not appear too aggressive. This will give evidence either of the dog's unstable personality, or bad manners, which is intolerable in Bull Terriers.
